Background

Founded in 1990, Van Moer Logistics is a leading logistics service provider with over 2,200 employees across its 40 locations in Belgium, Germany, and Romania. Its fully integrated logistics service spans four core activities:

  • Transport and distribution
  • Warehousing and value-added logistics
  • Port and intermodal logistics
  • Bulk and tank container logistics

Despite constant investments and significant growth, Van Moer Logistics has successfully retained the characteristics of a family-owned business, ensuring flexibility and exceptional customer service remains its top priorities.

Van Moer Logistics operates in a sustainable, safe, and qualitative manner to ensure it delivers high-standard services while guaranteeing an open, honest, and fair governance.

What were the challenges?

Van Moer Logistics was encountering several significant challenges in the realm of employee education and training. The most pressing issues were the prohibitive cost associated with traditional and formal education methods, and the fact that employees were located across different geographies, subsequently speaking different languages.

“Sending employees to in-person training sessions or workshops came with a substantial financial burden. The cost of sending even a single employee to a formal education program often ranged from €750-900 per day, per person. This financial commitment became increasingly unsustainable, especially as our workforce grew,” says Nathan Vermeire, HR Business Partner of Learning & Development at Van Moer Logistics.

Recognising these challenges, Van Moer Logistics acknowledged the need to invest in an eLibrary as a more cost-effective, sustainable, and flexible alternative to ensure its employees could continue developing and upskilling as required.

Discovering the advantages of Bookboon Learning

Van Moer Logistics researched the market for a provider that could offer quality and relevant eLearning content to its employees, as well as exceptional customer support to the business.

Having used – and implemented - Bookboon Learning in two companies prior to joining Van Moer Logistics, Nathan had previously experienced the benefits of the eLibrary.

Bookboon Learning provides access to 3,000+ self-development eBooks, over 2,000 audio learning resources, live virtual classrooms, and online courses, allowing employees to elevate and build expertise in areas of interest at any time, from wherever they are.

"I already knew how responsive and comprehensive the support services provided by the Bookboon team were. They’ve always been willing to collaborate closely with, not only me, but also the teams I’ve worked in. Having this insight really bolstered my confidence in the suitability of Bookboon’s eLearning content for the business,” says Nathan.

Nathan put together a business case and introduced Bookboon Learning to the rest of the learning and development team, as well as senior stakeholders, to showcase how the eLibrary could meet the needs of the business and its people.

“The decision to purchase Bookboon Learning was influenced by a combination of factors, but predominantly we loved how committed the team were in assisting us to achieve our training and development goals. The robust content library made Bookboon the ideal choice for our business,” says Nathan.

“The ability to select languages was also a pivotal advantage of Bookboon Learning, as it allows us to provide our people with the flexibility to offer eLearning content in multiple languages. We knew this feature would accommodate the diverse linguistic backgrounds of our workforce,” continues Nathan.

With employees spanning across Belgium, Germany, and Romania, having eLearning content available in multiple languages has reinforced Van Moer Logistics’ commitment to diverse, inclusive, and effective communication with its employees. In turn, it’s aided a more knowledgeable, engaged, and productive workforce.

The holistic approach, addressing both the eLearning content and customer support, played a vital role in Van Moer Logistics’ decision to partner with Bookboon Learning.

After realising the value and benefits of Bookboon Learning, the learning and development team reached out to initiate the implementation process. Full deployment was completed in just two weeks.

Enhancing the learning culture with Bookboon Learning

Among the wealth of content available on Bookboon Learning, the learning and development team has been able to identify particular topics that have resonated strongly with employees. Particularly, Van Moer Logistics observed that resources related to developing Microsoft Excel skills garnered the highest number of downloads, indicating a collective interest in this topic.

“This valuable insight highlights and emphasises how committed our people are in continuous learning and self-development, which is evident at all levels of the business. In turn, this will help us promote employee growth, innovation, and ultimately the sustained success of Van Moer Logistics,” says Nathan.

Recognising this trend, the learning and development team decided to leverage this valuable data to create tailored training courses that would address the most relevant and in-demand skills within the workforce. This proactive approach allowed Van Moer Logistics to cater directly to its employees' needs and foster professional growth in areas that mattered most to the wider teams.

“As a business, we’ve made substantial investments in eLearning driven by the imperative of a highly competitive market, where attracting and retaining top talent is paramount. In this industry, eLearning serves as a strategic tool to upskill and develop employees, making the company more attractive to prospective candidates, and ensuring that current employees remain competitive and adaptable in their roles. And Bookboon Learning is a driving force in achieving this,” concludes Nathan.
