BAXI Heating, a leading UK boiler manufacturer, puts learning and development at the heart of its business.

Built on the premise that employees develop 70% on the job, 20% through coaching and 10% through structured training, BAXI Heating has specific initiatives in place to support the career development of their employees.

BAXI Heating partnered with Access Career Development to enable employees to grow their skills and take control of their own career path, by creating a customised version of the career development platform to inspire and develop employees at all stages of their career.

Results from the Group Employee Survey revealed BAXI Heating employees felt there was a lack of opportunity for development and growth within the business. As a result, BAXI Heating wanted its colleagues to take ownership and control of their future aspirations and career goals, without the need for external help. It wanted to change employee mind sets by creating a programme allowing colleagues to proactively manage their careers and further their skills.

Access Career Development was configured to provide specific programmes of activity, including career and personality assessments, eLearning covering career management, productivity, resilience and work-life balance and other interactive tasks.

The implementation of Access Career Development’s online platform meant that, for the first time, colleagues could proactively take control of their career development with 24/7 access to career support using an intuitive and mobile responsive portal packed with 1000s of career tools.

With support from Access People, BAXI Heating started by launching a focussed ‘Career Development Programme’ for 150 colleagues, from new starters to long-termers, in line with its 150th anniversary celebrations.

BAXI Heating used its marketing team to run an internal launch email and marketing campaign, and briefed senior management and the executive board to ensure it had full support before launch.

In addition, Access Career Development ran webinars across two weeks for all colleagues on the initial career development programme, and their line managers to introduce the platform and drive engagement.

“It can show you where you are now and what you need to do to get to where you want to be; for me, until I had this platform, I didn’t know where I wanted to be. I found the plan section particularly useful as it has a wealth of information about making a plan for my career. There is a great wealth of information from assessments to find out who you are, to tests to find out who you want to be. The ‘discover’ section allowed me to gain an insight into myself, better understand who I am and what my strengths and weaknesses are, and it also showed me my potential of where I could be.”
