Anticipatory Care Plan
Anticipatory care is an often overlooked approach in healthcare that focuses on planning ahead to reduce deterioration and alleviate suffering, particularly for patients with life‑limiting conditions. Closely linked to palliative care, it involves creating anticipatory care plans that reflect a person’s wishes, fears and needs, whether they are cared for in hospitals, care homes, hospices or occasionally at home. This article explores what anticipatory care and anticipatory care plans are, how they complement preventative and proactive care, their relationship to advanced care planning, and how approaches differ between NHS England and NHS Scotland.
