The AI Disruption Challenge: Human-AI Collaboration

Access Group research shows that around 70% of people are already using AI, often in their personal lives, but their organisations have not kept pace. Andy’s point is direct: L&D cannot advise others on AI capability if they have not developed their own. The function needs to own its AI skills agenda first, then help the organisation build capability systematically. 

Andy makes a distinction that matters: AI is not simply a faster way to produce training content. It is fundamentally changing how people do their jobs, workflow by workflow. The L&D implication is significant: the question is not “how do we use AI to make learning faster?” but “how do we support people as their working processes change around them?

Julie sits on the cautious side of the AI debate, and makes a strong case for it. Speed of adoption without ethical consideration, without understanding data risks, without equity of access is not progress. Andy and Julie agree: the right posture is curious and cautious simultaneously. Both matter and neither should displace the other. 

As AI handles more routine cognitive tasks, the skills that remain distinctly human, critical thinking, judgement, empathy and ethical reasoning, become more strategically important, not less. Andy’s argument is that L&D professionals need to be building a blend of technical and human capabilities simultaneously, not treating them as separate agendas. 

Andy is genuinely excited about democratisation, the idea that AI tools can give more people access to development experiences previously available only to senior leaders, such as coaching. But Julie’s counterpoint holds: democratisation only works if access is genuinely equitable. Organisations that leave this to chance will widen the divide rather than close it.
