How AMS Trenchless centralised compliance across a demanding construction environment

For a horizontal directional drilling company working across tender-based contracts and regular SSIP audits, compliance isn’t a back-office concern. MY Compliance Management put everything Wayne Halsall needs within arm’s reach.

The Challenge

AMS Trenchless is the largest privately owned horizontal directional drilling and pipe ramming contractor in the UK. Operating across a wide geography, including offshore, they work in one of the most compliance-intensive corners of the construction industry. Horizontal directional drilling brings with it a dense web of regulatory requirements, from CVM regulations through to working at height and COSHH. Almost all of their work comes through competitive tender, which means clients routinely ask them to demonstrate due diligence before a contract is signed.

On top of client audits, the team faces regular SSIP assessments. Before MY Compliance Management, pulling together the evidence they needed was a manual, time-consuming exercise. Training records lived in Excel spreadsheets. Documents were scattered. When working offshore, incident reports could take several days to reach the office. Proving anything quickly was harder than it should have been.

“When I’m being audited, I can put my hands on everything that they need to see. We get audited quite regularly, not just by clients, but through SSIPs. And it’s the fact that we’ve got everything centralised.”

The Solution

MY Compliance Management became the single home for everything compliance-related at AMS Trenchless. The legal register was an early standout, bringing relevant regulations directly to Wayne rather than requiring him to go searching. The asset manager module, more recently adopted, has added another layer of centralised control.

Training management moved out of spreadsheets and into the platform, unlocking something genuinely useful for the operations team. Directors can now view employees by skill set and training status, building site teams with confidence that every person has the right accreditation before work begins.

Offshore incident reporting has been transformed. What previously took several days to reach the office can now be logged in minutes via mobile scanning, meaning the right people are informed and actions can be taken without delay.

QR codes have changed the way the team operates on site. Each employee has a personal QR code giving them instant access to their qualifications and tickets on their phone, replacing the wallet full of cards that used to be standard. The same approach powers the COSHH substance inventory, with QR codes on site always displaying the current, up-to-date assessment, updated remotely from the office without anyone needing to travel.

Toolbox talks are distributed through the requirements module. Managers and supervisors receive the request, get it signed, and it comes straight back to Wayne, recorded and stored.

“We inputted everything into there that normally was in an Excel spreadsheet. From the Ops Director’s point of view, they could gear up a team knowing that everybody had the accreditation, the skills and knowledge to actually hit the ground running.”

The Results

The shift that Wayne returns to most is focus. With stats, trends, and KPIs available at a glance, meetings with directors and managers are now driven by data. Rather than spreading effort across every area of health and safety, the team can pinpoint where attention is actually needed and direct resources accordingly.

“The more you put into MY Compliance, the more you get out. Having the stats to back up everything gives the business focus. We can then focus on areas like root causes and areas of weakness, rather than wasting hours on an area that doesn’t need the time.”

The Support

Wayne describes a support relationship that has evolved into something more collaborative than transactional. Whether through the portal or a direct call, the team at MY Compliance Management treat his queries not as problems to close off, but as opportunities to improve the product for everyone.

“It always seems to be a way of improving the product as a whole, not just for me but for everybody. It’s a great feeling that you’re not a burden.”
