Mobile working in health and social care is enabling community nurses to do their work, collaborate with colleagues and stay in contact. All via one mobile device, from any location, at any time.

Case Study 1

Rio Mobilise is helping nurses within the Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust make more efficient use of their time.

Using Rio Mobilise, community nurses have been able to reduce their travel time between care calls and reduce the number of returns to base required, resulting in more face-to-face time with clients.

INTRODUCTION

Rio Mobilise is an app that allows carers to use Rio EPR while away from the office and working. It gives staff secure access to records, as well as allowing them to capture information when at care calls.

Since September 2019, Rio Mobilise has been used in conjunction with Rio electronic patient records (EPR) to help the Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

Rio Mobilise enables community nurses to complete their work, collaborate with colleagues and stay in contact all via one mobile device from any location, at any time.

HOW ACCESS HELPED

Before implementing Rio Mobilise, the Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust was struggling with older mobile devices and bulky laptops to access patient records and to record care data. This was slow and cumbersome; both in terms of using the devices and lugging around the gear.

The Access Group proposed using Rio Mobilise, the mobile version of Rio EPR. Powered by Totalmobile, it’s a simple app that works on smartphones and tablets – both of which are easy for staff to carry around between calls – and provides secure but quick access to the electronic patient records that are so vital to community care.

The Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust said in their own words that they wanted “an environment where data was captured and was immediately available to any of the clinicians within the trust.” By using Rio Mobilise, each carer and each team has a tailored view, showing only the information that they need to deliver care to their patients.

Rio Mobilise also synchronises with Rio EPR to allow offline access to records and notes, which is particularly helpful in areas with poor mobile internet signal – especially more rural areas. Data is then automatically uploaded to Rio once signal is reached.

“It’s hugely important that we can give the staff the time that they need to do their job within their contracted hours – not having to work additional hours just to keep up.

“Rio Mobilise enables us to do that, because it’s reducing travel time, it’s giving them the information they need there and then, at the point of care.”

THE RESULT

  • Quick but secure access to patient records and notes
  • Easy-to-use data recording
  • The app runs on smartphones and tablets
  • Offline access to patient data
  • The ability for staff to start and end the day from home
  • Access to information whilst on the move, without having to return to base as often
  • Increased productivity by reducing the time taken to use Rio EPR
  • Improved staff satisfaction by reducing delays with record keeping
  • Improved work/life balance following a reduction in work encroaching upon personal time

“It takes stress of me. When I finish at the end of the day I’ve actually finished. I haven’t gone home thinking ‘I’ve got those five calls to put on tomorrow’. It’s just taken a lot of pressure off my job role.”
