Guestline: Hotel distribution and operations platform provider

Guestline was founded in the early 2000s and has been under private equity ownership since 2016. By the time of acquisition, the company had 250 employees, £24 million in annual turnover and a strong foothold in the hospitality tech sector.

Guestline CEO, Andrew McGregor, shares his experience

"As a private equity-backed company, we always had an exit strategy in mind; we knew that several interested parties had been tracking us, including Access. However, we had several criteria in relation to the business we would ultimately sell to. Ultimately, you and your team will live with the outcome's consequences, so it’s essential to take time in the early stages to understand their vision and culture.

Firstly, we wanted a buyer with financial security and the ability to close a deal quickly. Cultural alignment was also crucial to us, and the acquirer needed to be a strategic fit for growth. We wanted a buyer who would be supportive and Access provided scale and resources while preserving operational autonomy.

Despite our initial perceptions of Access as a large corporate, we soon found that Access operated more like a federation of agile, founder-led businesses. Don't assume it acts like a big business, because it's a big business.

“Once we got to know the people and understood their vision, it became clear they were the right partner. They supported our ambitions and brought expertise and capability that benefited us long term.

My advice to any founder considering a sale: don’t judge an acquirer by size alone. Take the time to understand their culture, speak to others who’ve been through it, and ensure it’s a place where your business can truly thrive.

Since the acquisition, our company has tripled in revenue, and our headcount has increased from 250 to 750, making us one of the fastest-growing software companies within The Access Group."
