Introduction
Every pay run is built on trust.
Trust that employees will be paid accurately and on time. Trust that businesses will meet their obligations. Trust that payroll teams will navigate an increasingly complex landscape with confidence and precision.
24 July 2026 marks National Payroll Day, an opportunity to recognise the professionals who make that trust possible.
A profession that never stands still
Few business functions have evolved as dramatically as payroll.
Over the last 40 years, payroll professionals have helped shape a profession that continuously adapts, innovates and grows. Along the way, they have successfully navigated:
- The shift from manual, paper-based processes
- Rapid advances in payroll technology
- Increasing compliance and reporting requirements
- Single Touch Payroll (STP)
- PayDay Super and ongoing legislative change
- The rise of automation, AI and cloud-native payroll
Through every shift, payroll professionals have stayed focused on what matters most: ensuring people are paid correctly and on time.
The people behind every pay run
Payroll may happen behind the scenes, but its impact is felt across every organisation.
Every successful pay run reflects the expertise, dedication and attention to detail of payroll teams working tirelessly to keep businesses running smoothly.
Payroll professionals play a vital role in:
- Ensuring employees are paid accurately and on time
- Maintaining compliance with changing regulations
- Supporting employee confidence and trust
- Reducing business risk
- Helping organisations operate effectively
Celebrating 40 years together
For 40 years, we’ve had the privilege of supporting payroll professionals through some of the most significant moments in payroll’s evolution.

The payroll profession today looks very different to the profession of 1985.
What began as a largely administrative function has become a strategic and highly specialised discipline, balancing compliance, technology, workforce expectations and business performance.
Throughout that journey, payroll professionals have continually risen to new challenges, embraced new technologies and raised the bar for the profession.
We’ve been fortunate to witness that evolution firsthand and support payroll teams through many of the industry’s biggest changes—from the early days of MicrOpay Payroll Manager through to today’s solutions, including MicrOpay Evo , Definitiv Evo and Wage Easy.
More importantly, we’ve learned from the people at the centre of it all.
Looking ahead
The future of payroll is full of opportunity.
New technologies will continue to transform the profession. Compliance requirements will keep evolving. Expectations around employee experience will keep growing.
One thing won’t change: the critical role payroll professionals play in every organisation.
This National Payroll Day, we’re taking a moment to recognise the people behind every pay run and the contribution they make every day.
