The initiative forms part of Access’s global environmental sustainability strategy, which focuses on carbon reduction, supply chain sustainability, and employee engagement. The event was held in collaboration with the Earth Warriors Association who provided technical expertise and logistical support.

The initiative brought together 35 Access GOC KL employees and 27 TAR UMT representatives – including 21 students and 6 faculty members to plant 50 Rhizophora mucronata saplings, locally known as Pokok Bakau Kurap, in one of Malaysia’s key coastal ecosystems.

Organized by the Access Thrive Environment team, the half-day event went beyond tree planting. It was a demonstration of how environmental stewards, community leaders, and future talents can work side by side for a shared cause.

Chee Gay Lim, Managing Director, Access Global Operations Centre Kuala Lumpur commented:

“Sustainability isn’t just about protecting the environment, it’s about empowering people to take action. By working alongside our academic partners and the next generation of professionals, we’re building a culture of responsibility that will endure.”

The planted mangrove species, known as Pokok Bakau Kurap, serves multiple environmental functions crucial to climate resilience. These coastal trees act as natural barriers against erosion, provide essential nursery habitats for marine species, improve water quality, and sequester significant carbon quantities – directly supporting climate change mitigation efforts.

Through its partnership with TAR UMT, Access is also fostering environmental awareness and leadership skills among students, ensuring that sustainability principles are embedded in both industry and academia.

The collaborative planting initiative reflects Access's broader environmental sustainability strategy, which encompasses carbon reduction, supply chain sustainability, and employee engagement across the company.
