How Birkbeck achieved record attendance at annual Careers Fair
Birkbeck, University of London recently partnered with Access Career Development to create a Digital Careers Fair in their Career Centre to help them achieve an ambitious attendance target for their annual Careers Fair. Record attendance was achieved, with 2,000+ students and graduates attending the event, and the careers team was delighted with the end result.
In addition to significantly increasing event attendance compared to previous years, the online employer profiles in their Career Centre will help employers raise awareness of job opportunities among students actively developing their employability skills.
Jenna Davies, Head of Service, Careers and Enterprise, shares her thoughts on the partnership:
"Our annual careers fair at Birkbeck has been running for four years now, consistently attracting hundreds of our students and graduates and connecting them with a range of employers that are keen to meet our diverse cohort.
In 2019, we wanted to go bigger and attract more students and more employers across the event. A larger venue meant we had the capacity to do more, but reaching our target of getting attendee numbers in the thousands was an ambitious aim.
The Access People recognised our ambitions and played a huge part in driving Careers Fair content to our audience in the lead up to the event, developing a digital version of the Fair for our students and graduates to access.
A dedicated employer page was set up for twenty employers, showcasing their opportunities, their organisation’s culture, video content and social channels, which meant attendees for the Careers Fair could get insider information before, during and after the event."

- 20 company profiles created for Digital Careers Fair
- Digital Careers Fair promoted to over 11,000 students
- 2,000 students and graduates attended Careers Fair (highest ever attendance)
“The online content had a significant impact on student registrations and subsequently we had our highest conversation rate to date for any event. Close to 2,000 students and graduates attended on the day and we received feedback from users of the online platform sharing their positive experiences.
We saw a spike in registrations each week when direct content around the Careers Fair was shared via our newsletter, and I strongly believe that this online content influenced us meeting our ambitious event objectives.”
