Former WorldCom chief executive Bernard Ebbers has been ordered to report to a federal prison on September 26th to begin serving a 25-year fraud sentence.

Mr Ebbers was convicted of conspiracy, securities fraud and other accounting offences worth $11 billion in March last year following the collapse of WorldCom in 2002.

He has remained on bail since then as appeals against his conviction and sentence were heard but both have now been confirmed by the courts.

Billions of dollars of investor money were lost due to the collapse of his company, leading to prosecutors insisting on a long jail term. His earliest chance of parole will be in 2028.

His sentence is five times longer than that given to his chief financial officer Scott Sullivan, who cut a deal with prosecutors and was star witness at Mr Ebbers' trial.
