Employees who continue to go into work despite being unwell could be at risk of making the illness worse and needing a longer period of time to recover, which may dent business productivity, one sector commentator has claimed.

Gill Trevelyan, head of good practice services for Acas, added that a worker who visited the office while suffering from an infectious disease could end up passing on the condition to their colleagues and increase the overall sickness level of the organisation.

"Employers can do a lot to help keep their employees healthy, including ensuring that both the workplace and job design take health and wellbeing into account," she advised.

Ms Trevelyan went on to recommend that businesses provided exercise facilities or opportunities and healthy food options for their employees.

According to FirstCare, workers should be encouraged to make full use of their breaks as taking a short stroll away from the workplace environment helps people to relax and look at the more positive side of life.
