Women executives account for 3% of FTSE 350 chiefs

Female business executives in the FTSE 350 account for three per cent of the total number, according to a study by accountancy firm Deloitte.

There are currently 97 female non-executives and 16 executives in the FTSE 100 and 94 and 24 respectively in the FTSE 250.

Carol Arrowsmith, head of the remuneration team at Deloitte, said: "There is still a huge gender imbalance in the boardroom and you can count the number of female chief executives on the fingers of one hand.

"It's still difficult for them to get to the top of a corporate hierarchy."

The survey found that the percentage is the same as last year's figures in spite of a growing number of women entering the businesses career.

According to Deloitte, an average executive director salary is £350,000 per year and non-executive directors who sit part-time on boards receive an average of £47,000.

Figures obtained by the Guardian's annual survey showed that there were 20 female executives in the FTSE 100 last year, up from 17 in 2004 and 15 in 2003.
