Window 'is all that is needed'

News Article - 18 June 2008
Category: Technology

Businesses keen to begin accounting for carbon emissions may wish to abandon plans to purchase new computers, as soon all they may need is a window, according to one sector commentator.

Rob Lovell, chief executive officer of ThinkGrid, said the PC industry needed to adapt for changes by focusing more on creating devices that allow users to connect to services elsewhere.

"Instead of people buying a PC with 56 CPEs and a terabyte of RAM, you don't really need that, you can have these services centrally delivered to you and then all you need is a window to connect to the internet," he explained.

He added that things would begin to move this way as at the moment users had to update their PCs on average every three years.

Mr Lovell's comments come as it was revealed by Gartner that PC shipments will total 257 million units in 2009, an 11.9 per cent decline from 2008.
