While many UK businesses may be keen to begin
accounting for
carbon emissions, they may soon have no choice in cutting down their travel plans.
Lord Turner, the chairman of the committee on climate change, recently proposed that people should be given personal flight limits to lower pollution from the aviation industry.
This could lead to companies having to make further use of technology that allows them to hold meetings and conferences over the phone or internet in order not to surpass the limitations.
The committee is currently investigating whether the air industry can meet a target of reducing
emissions to below 2005 levels by 2050.
And Lord Turner has suggested that the move to limit flights may even become a permanent one.
However, Peter Morris, chief economist at Ascend, said flight rationing was "irrational" as it did not address the industries which produced higher
carbon emissions.
According to recent research by the WWF, if one in five business travellers in Europe used video conferencing rather than flying 22 million tones of
carbon emissions would be saved every year.
