The forthcoming release of Microsoft's Windows Vista operating platform reflects a change in the workings of the software industry, it has been claimed.
Expected to be launched in the US this week, Vista will mark "the end of an era" in the software market, the Financial Times quotes software expert Michael Cusumano as saying.
According to the newspaper, the industry is increasingly moving towards 'software as a service', with companies providing services through the internet powered by software working on their own servers.
Microsoft is set to focus its own attention on this emerging trend, the publication states.
"We look at Vista as the platform for how the digital lifestyle will evolve," said Brad Goldberg, Windows Client business' product manager.
Software is likely to become easier to use and less likely to fall victim to security threats following the launch of Vista, the publication suggests.
Last week, Microsoft announced that the first service pack update for Vista could be out by the end of the year.
