The Windows Vista operating system is due for release in New York today and will be available for purchase by businesses.

Additionally, Microsoft is also launching its Office business software.

The launch, at the Nasdaq stock exchange, is to be conducted by the company's chief executive Steve Ballmer, who will be accompanied by executives from PC makers including Hewlett-Packard and Dell, according to the Independent.

Initially, Vista was anticipated to be ready for release in 2004, but the corporation decided to simplify the design and also make changes to the software which would provide more security protection as well as an enhanced search capability, the publication reports.

Analyst at consulting firm Gartner, Michael Silver, told the Independent: "A big coming-out party for Vista will act as a wake-up call to hardware and software vendors. Some of their infrastructure is still incomplete, device drivers not ready, applications that aren't yet compatible."

Gartner recently predicted that the product would run on around ten per cent of PCs in its first 12 months, compared with forecasts by telecoms advisor Ovum that the number would reach 15 per cent.
