UK SMEs rate hardware failure top concern

Small and medium-sized enterprises in Britain were forced to implement disaster recovery schemes more often due to hardware failure than anything else last year.
A new study by Sungard Availability Services found that more than one third (35 per cent) of smaller businesses felt that hardware failure was the number one threat to their operations in 2007, though it fell from 45 per cent in 2006.
Devastating summer floods caused disruption or threat of disruption to thousands of businesses last year, with 12 per cent of firms forced to invoke disaster recovery plans because of the weather in 2007.
A total of 22 per cent of companies polled by Sungard said that they had invoked disaster recovery plans because of power disruption last year, with business continuity placed at risk because firms do not have comprehensive steps in place to protect their data.

Keith Tilley, Sungard executive vice president for UK and Europe, emphasised the importance and ease of planning around hardware failure, urging small businesses to examines ways to protect critical information and ensure that it remains available.
