A new independent review on identity assurance has been
published by HM Treasury that examines ways of maximising current
ID assurance systems and infrastructure.
Conducted by Sir James Crosby, the review also explores ways in
which current systems can be used to improve economic and social
advantage in the UK.
Entitled Challenges and opportunities in identity assurance, the
review highlights the economic and social consequence of any mass
ID system such as ID Cards.
"I have had the privilege of listening to a very wide
range of opinion," Sir James said. "But
government departments and agencies, private sector companies,
regulators, special interest groups and technology providers were
all united on one thing. The future of identity lies in putting the
consumer first."
According to the review author and chair of the Public-Private
Forum on Identity Management, any future identity system will call
for "radical new thinking".
Sir James is the former chief executive of HBOS, chief executive
of Halifax and current deputy chairman of the Financial Services
Authority (FSA).
Accounting software packages can help companies to more
effectively manage identity issues and the economic ramifications
of any changes to the current system.
