For businesses considering beginning
accounting for
carbon emissions, it is important they understand their environmental agendas in order to effectively deliver them, one sector commentator has noted.
Jonathan Green, associate on the
carbon reduction team at JMP Consultants, said time and energy needed to be spent on applying the right
carbon metric to make the appropriate business decision for the outcome that firms wished to achieve.
And he added that the question of what was being measured for needed to be understood strategically to see why this corporate
social responsibility (CSR) and environmental
carbon agenda was important to businesses.
"You will then have a landscape to operate and support senior officials to drag the agenda through your business," Mr Green explained.
He concluded that there were lots of ways to
calculate carbon footprint for businesses currently available and the right type needed to be chosen for a company's specific output.
According to a recent ACTE - KDS Survey, 61 per cent of organisations now have a CSR charter, in comparison to 59 per cent in 2008.
