Study: Accountants in high demand

News Article - 03 October 2007

Accountants are seen as a precious commodity within the industry with a shortage of talent leaving some firms struggling to bring in the best people, a study has revealed.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS), citing a CA magazine survey, claims that 57 per cent of the largest 50 accountancy firms in the country are expecting "serious challenges" when it comes to finding the best people for the job.

Those working in audit, insolvency and financial services are the most sought-after professionals with an increasing number of practices relying on recruitment consultants to attract the top staff.

Robert Outram, editor of CA Magazine, spoke of a "mismatch" when it comes to supply and demand in the industry.

"It's good news for CAs [chartered accountants] looking for a move, or a salary hike, but bad news for their employers. Accountancy firms cannot grow without people," he said.

ICAS recently called upon the industry to show courage, not cowardice, in the field of financial reporting.
