The current economic boom across south-east Asia is leading a 15 per cent increase in small and medium-sized enterprises' (SMEs') spending on IT, it has been reported.

According to Access Markets International (AMI) Partners, businesses in this area are to spend $13.4 billion (£6.8 billion) on new technology such as payroll software and integrated accounts packages during 2008.

Cindy Tan, research data analyst at AMI, explained that for many companies in emerging markets such as Vietnam and Indonesia, the IT purchases will be First Wave products.

"The First Wave involves building the basic IT infrastructure, such as deploying PCs, productivity suites and accounting software," she explained.

Last week, Accountancy Age magazine reported that SME accounting software is often used by firms for ten years or longer.

Mid range accounting softwareoften boasts a good level of stability and reliability, the publication explained, adding that these are crucial elements of business IT.
