Software distributors are expected to experience strong business health this year, according to a new report from Gartner.

The firm claims the industry will see an 8.2 per cent revenue increase, reaching $190.7 billion (£97.3 billion) during 2008.

Although companies are expected to see a slight decline in growth due to the slowdown in the economy, they are predicted to hold a competitive edge over other industries as investment in business and accounting software continues.

"No market is inherently immune to a softening in demand, however, the magnitude of a downturn will vary, affecting software markets and vendors differently," commented Tom Eid, research vice-president at the firm.

Joanne Correia of the firm stated that mergers and acquisitions between small and large firms are likely to increase throughout the year.

Patrick Astre, founder of Astre Planning, told the Exchange Morning Post that one of the first steps a company can take to weather the looming economic recession is to invest in a good accounting software package.
