Software developers 'turning to Linux'

News Article - 04 July 2007
Category:

New research has shown that increasing numbers of software developers are turning away from Windows in favour of the Linux platform.

Less than 65 per cent of developers are targeting a Windows operating system, compared with 74 per cent last year, the study by research firm Evans Data found.

In contrast, the proportion of developers targeting Linux has soared from 8.8 per cent last year to 11.8 per cent now.

John Andrews, president and chief executive of Evans Data, said that the results are indicative of an evolving market.

"Linux has benefited, but we also see corresponding growth in niche operating systems for non-traditional client devices. The landscape is changing," he commented.

Microsoft recently announced that it is to make available options for businesses running Windows Vista to downgrade to XP.

While it will not supply the software to do this, it will allow firms to downgrade using used versions of the system without registration keys.
