Smaller businesses may benefit from outsourcing their payroll to an external online service, it has been claimed.

Karen Paterson of Patersons online service explained to AccountingWeb that this technique will ensure that any upgrades to payroll software are taken care of, alongside year-end and year-in returns.

Her sentiments were echoed by MidlandHR's payroll and legislation adviser John Black who remarked that with the increasing employment regulation and legislation, it is becoming more and more expensive and complex to rely on in-house payroll software.

"The advent of mandatory in-year electronic filing may give this further impetus as it's no longer just a year-end issue," he said.

According to the news source, small businesses can either take advantage of the new payroll service providers in the marketplace or enlist the assistance of companies which specialise in making the connection with online accounting software packages.

Ensuring accounting software is up-to-date is especially important at the minute, as the April 5th tax year deadline is just over one month away.
