Should the government take the lead?

News Article - 19 December 2008
Category:

It is time for the government to take the lead in carrying out carbon cutting in the office, one sector commentator has claimed, news which may be of interest to companies if one of their business goals is to begin accounting for carbon.

Lara Conaway, Morgan Lovell's sustainability manager, said that in general many firms were only aware that cutting their emissions by reducing energy usage would also result in lower costs.

However, she added that it was harder to make organisations aware, for example, of cutting carbon in deliveries to and from the office.

"Unless [the government] show businesses the way, it gives everyone an excuse to opt out. They need to be far more open about their reporting and actions taken," Ms Conaway explained.

A new report by the Sustainable Development Committee recently revealed that many government offices are not on track to meet reductions in their carbon dioxide emissions for 2010 to 2011.
