Scottish accountants 'should be regulated by lawyers'

News Article - 01 October 2007
Category:

Accountants in Scotland should be subject to regulations from legal professionals in order to join multi-disciplinary partnerships (MDPs), it has been claimed.

These comments, made by Douglas Connell, came at a recent Edinburgh conference entitled The Public Interest - Delivering Scottish Legal Services designed to discuss the new 'Tesco Law', the Herald reports.

And Mr Connell, who is the cofounder of Turcan Connell, said that MDPs should have lawyers making up two-thirds of the party, with accountants, chartered surveyors or investment managers making up the remainder.

All of these individuals or organisations would then be subject to regulation by the Law Society.

"Whether you want to call these vehicles MDPs or not, they could revitalise the provision of advisory services in many parts of Scotland," the publication reports him as saying.

The Tesco Law suggests that supermarkets and other non-lawyers in the UK should be able to own a company that offers legal services.
