Software as a service (Saas) has the potential to revolutionise the future of the accountancy profession, one expert has claimed.

Doug Sleeter, founder and president of the Sleeter group, said that the initial interest in such products was "sluggish", but it has been replaced by massive interest and excitement.

Writing for the CPA Technology Advisor, the expert cited several advances in accounting software that have constituted breakthroughs and enables the technology to become a viable force in the industry.

"And as you help your clients plan future upgrades of products, services, software and workflows, Saas technologies should be some of the first products you consider," he said.

In addition, he drew distinctions between online and offline software, stating that they had their relative merits.

Mr Sleeter has educated more than 25,000 finance professionals in the use of accountancy systems.
