Companies in the UK may wish to make the option of home working for their staff one of their business goals this year, following the comments of one sector commentator.

Rebecca George, chairperson of the British Computer Society's Women's Forum, said the flexibility to work remotely has played a big part in females' in particular making the decision to work in IT.

This may be because it allows them to juggle their careers with their family life.

She added: "These days a lot of organisations make it possible to work from home which gives people a bit more flexibility and autonomy in their job."

Ms George was speaking ahead of W Tech 2009 - a free motivational showcase supporting women interested in IT which will be held on February 3rd.

Meanwhile, figures from the Office of National Statistics show that in the second quarter of 2008 the employment rate was 79 per cent for men and 70 per cent for women.
