Regulation of data protection 'must keep up with technology'

News Article - 11 February 2009

In order to create a stronger business, companies should ensure that any technology they use that allows them to collect data meet any privacy or similar regulations, one sector commentator has claimed.

Isabella Sankey, director of policy at Liberty, said that technology in itself was neutral, it came down to how it was used, as it could be utilised for the good or the worst.

This meant that laws that dealt specifically with the use of different technological devices were met so that privacy rights could be safeguarded.

"It does mean you are able to maybe trace more about a person, whatever it is, but you need to keep up in terms of regulation and make sure that there are laws," Ms Sankey stated.

Last month, the Press Association reported that it had been claimed that rules that will force internet companies to keep details of every email sent in the UK are an attack on privacy and a waste of money.
