The number of people training to be chartered accountants (CA) in Scotland has reached record levels, new figures have revealed.

Data from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS) showed that 410 Scotttish-based students entered CA training this year, up from 305 in 2002.

This follows recent reforms by ICAS which make it cheaper for smaller businesses to appoint graduate trainees.

Meanwhile, 194 Scottish trainees were recruited by the Big Four - Ernst & Young, KPMG, Deloitte and PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Mark Allison, executive director of education at ICAS, said that while last year's total trainee intake was 1020, this year's number stands at 1080 for the current academic year.

"Recruitment by firms runs from September to July," he told the Herald.

"We expect the number to go as high as 1200 - well past the previous best in the institute's history."
