More Britons are moving into public sector employment as cuts are made to the number of positions available in the financial sector, one sector commentator has claimed - which may result in business growth being boosted in the industry.
Gerwyn Davies, government policy advisor for the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, that self-employment was also on the rise.
However, he added: "It obviously remains to be seen how viable that future is at a time when we are going through one of the worst periods since the Second World War."
Mr Davies added that what was needed was for the economy to pick up so that companies would be able to begin hiring again giving redundant workers more opportunities, although he claimed that there was no sign of this happening in the short term.
According to the Office for National Statistics, the employment rate for people of working age was 74.1 per cent for the three months to January 2009, down 0.1 percentage points from the previous quarter and down 0.7 per cent over the year.
