Oyster card 'popular in accounting for carbon'

The Oyster card is very popular and may prove useful as a tool to get Londoners accounting for carbon emissions, one sector commentator has claimed.

A spokesperson for Transport for London explained that the card was "certainly" one of the options being examined as a way to enable the group to take its proposed cycle-hire scheme forward.

"We're working towards the introduction of cycling on super highways which will provide alternative routes into central London for cyclists," he noted.

The representative added that safety was also a key issue in the campaign and that an increase in cyclists would make it safer for those cycling on the roads of the capital.

He noted that the group was investing in cycle training schemes to teach people about safety and that the classes would be free or subsidised in all London boroughs.

Mayor Boris Johnson recently pledged his commitment to the introduction of a central London bike hire scheme.
