Newly-elected Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and
Wales (ICAEW) vice president Gerald Russell has indicated a desire
to ensure the reputation of the sector is not damaged by the credit
crunch and the consequent economic slowdown.
It was announced yesterday that Mr Russell will take office on June
4th 2008, but he has already stated some of his short and
medium-term aims.
He also suggested that he is looking forward to helping the
institute achieve the goals set as part of its "ambitious strategy"
during his three-year tenure.
Speaking after the statement had been made at the ICAEW's monthly
council meeting, the new vice president said: "Our profession faces
significant threats as well as opportunities over the next three
years and beyond.
"I'm delighted that I will be able to use my experience for the
benefit of my own professional body."
Mr Russell's appointment comes following last week's publication of
the ICAEW Business Confidence Monitor which showed business
confidence has fallen to its lowest level since 2003.
