The majority of small businesses in the UK believe that the internet will become integral to their firms over the next five years, yet 40 per cent have no company website, a study has shown.
Research by BT Business found that 40 per cent of small firms have little web presence, while more than a fifth had made no online mark.
However, almost three-quarters of respondents said that the internet would be key to their business over the next five years, with 63 per cent feeling that the web would help them compete with bigger rivals.
BT Business' head of market development Ivan Croxford said that communicating via the web through channels such as social networking and email was set to increase in a business capacity.
"That is set to grow as small businesses begin to see the real benefits of the latest technology, which give them the ability to interact more easily and meaningfully with customers, partners and suppliers," he added.
In related news, a white paper published recently by media company founder Daryl Willcox explains how smaller firms can boost the amount of traffic they receive on their company websites.
