Most accountants 'need to switch jobs to get promoted'

News Article - 22 December 2006
Category:

The majority of finance staff - such as accountants - do not feel their careers will progress at their current organisations, a survey has shown.

Some 55 per cent of respondents to a YouGov/Investors in People poll said that they would have to move to a different company in order to get a promotion, while 44 per cent believed they deserved to be promoted within six months.

The findings indicate that poor communication and secrecy surrounding the promotional process could be the reasons behind the low optimism expressed by many of the respondents.

Reasons for previously overlooking staff for new roles were found to have not been fully explained, causing further employee angst.

Investors in People director June Williams said: "This research clearly highlights the dangers of bad communication."

She added that finance chiefs should clearly state which opportunities are available and help employees achieve their potential through the creation of action plans.

Without offering workers the chance to progress within the company, it is likely the employees will move on, she concluded.

According to Accountancy Age, employees should be kept well-informed at work, otherwise business chiefs risk lowering their morale.
