The government's business support service Business Link has seen a marked increase in the number of small businesses looking for advice on how to control costs.
Erica Russell, a sustainable business advisor from Business Link, said that cost-cutting was certainly now moving up the priority list for such firms.
But she added that a relatively high proportion of small companies were remaining optimistic about their business health during the recession.
"Most small businesses are very entrepreneurial by nature and are out fighting in quite a tough market, so I'm not surprised by their optimism," Ms Russell enthused.
Her comments come in response to recent research from uSwitch that shows that while almost 76 per cent of small businesses feel confident about surviving the recession nearly half are looking at cutting back on all of their costs.
In addition, 19 per cent note that the recession is having no impact on their business at all, while nine per cent claim the recession is actually proving beneficial for them.
