Computer giant Microsoft has shipped the second preview of its new SQL Server product, which is due to be released in the second quarter of 2008, it has been reported.
According to InternetNews.com, the firm is using the community technology preview method rather than another beta test cycle for the product.
SQL Server 2008 is expected to be launched at an LA gala at the same time as Windows Server 2008 but the product is not likely to be formally released until weeks after, the website states.
"The last CTP will be released around the 'launch' [gala] time frame," said Francois Ajenstat, director of SQL Server marketing.
A number of new features will be present in the new SQL Server, including enhanced database mirroring and better maintenance for "extendable events" - thus allowing for correlation between event logs.
"Overall, SQL Server 2008 builds on SQL Server 2005's foundation, adding support for spatial and unstructured data types as well as more management capabilities," Mr Ajenstat added.
The company is forecasting double digit revenue growth as a result of its forthcoming product launches, ZDNet.co.uk reports.
