Microsoft launches Longhorn beta amid tidy earnings

News Article - 27 April 2007
Category: Technology

Computer giant Microsoft has reported a 65 per cent jump in fiscal earnings in its third quarter as it releases its Longhorn Server Beta 3 for public trial.

The latest server counterpart to Windows Vista has been made available in the form of free downloads in eight different versions in a bid to get feedback from testers.

According to Microsoft, the downloads will work until April next year, at which point they will expire; however by this time, the release version of Longhorn Server should already be available.

To run the server, a computer will need a minimum of 512 MB of RAM and an 11GHz processor as well as 8GB of space on the hard drive.

Following the financial results, which showed a 32 per cent rise in revenue, Microsoft's chief financial officer Chris Liddell said: "It's an excellent quarter - the financial results are very good."

He added that figures could be boosted later in the year by a number of forthcoming product releases, including the Longhorn Server.
