The global security community needs to combine all the business tools at its disposal in order to address more "sophisticated" online attacks, according to the general manager of security engineering and communications at Microsoft.

George Stathakopoulos stated that while individual organisations face a difficult task when looking to counter online attacks, working together may help to solve this issue.

Initiatives such as the Microsoft Active Protections Programme (Mapp) have been launched to help combat security threats. Security software writers can use Mapp information to integrate code for their own software in line with Microsoft's security patches.

Microsoft recently announced the results of a new study that has revealed that there is an average of 6.6 degrees of separation between users of its instant messaging system.

According to VNUNet, an analysis of 30 billion instant messages found that 78 per cent of the world's population can be linked in seven or fewer steps.
