The new version of SQL Server is set to be launched towards the end of next February, Microsoft has announced.

Plans to release the product, along with Windows Server 2008 and Visual Studio, were outlined at the recent Worldwide Partner Conference in Denver by Kevin Turner, the computing giant's chief operating officer.

Allison Watson, corporate vice president of the Worldwide Partner Group at Microsoft, described the release event as creating "a wealth of opportunity for Microsoft partners".

The firm is now suggesting that partners planning to invest in the latest SQL Server of other products prepare themselves by finding out more about the software, with many joining up to the Certified for Windows Server 2008 early access programme.

Microsoft states that the new version of SQL Server will be more reliable and allow for better management and scalability.

The 2008 edition is also set to cut the time and cost of managing data infrastructure, the firm adds.
