Reducing the world's
carbon emissions measurement will help create millions of jobs as
well as aiding the developing world, according to a new UN
report.
Entitled Green Jobs: Towards decent work in a sustainable, low-
carbon world, the study predicts that sectors
like energy supply, forestry and transportation will all see new
employment opportunities arise and there will be a "greening" of
corporate social responsibility in the construction
industry.
It also cites various projects in developing countries that are
creating jobs and increasing
productivity, including a scheme to train people
in Bangladesh to become solar technicians.
"Today, sustainability should be non-negotiable, as should the
notion of an equitable transition," said the report.
"If these were to become the main principles guiding policy,
business practices, and - over time - the behaviour of individuals,
then green jobs and decent work can be expected to grow both
exponentially and hand-in-hand."
The report also predicts that the market for environmental goods
and services will grow from $1,370 billion (£758 billion) per
year currently to $2,740 billion (£1,517 billion) by
2020.
