The big four accountancy firms are not likely to withdraw their business from Liverpool in a bid to focus on nearby Manchester, it has been claimed.

Barry Flynn, Ernst & Young's (E&Y's) senior partner in Liverpool noted that staff numbers in the city have increased by 20 per cent over the last 12 months, with further expansion anticipated in the near future, the Liverpool Daily Post reports.

In addition, he expressed his hope that E&Y will be the fastest growing of the big four firms in the Merseyside location. Indeed, he anticipated the total employees passing 100 over the next half a decade.

"We plan to increase the breadth of our service lines, expand our client base and add further to our staff numbers - looking for the brightest and best talent," he told the publication.

E&Y operates in 140 countries, employing 114,000 people on its various bases.
