firm KPMG has launched a code of conduct for its suppliers, designed to ensure that they adhere with ethical and environmental principles.

The company is to write to all of its main contract suppliers this week to ask them to sign up to the document, which lays out ten core principles four areas, namely business conduct, labour conditions and human rights and the environment.

KPMG head of procurement, Mark Powderham, said that the company had strived in recent years to embed corporate social responsibility (CSR) and diversity throughout its dealings and practices.

"Bought-in goods and services are critical to the achievement of our CSR and diversity objectives and as such the logical next step is to integrate our suppliers and contractors within our approach," he said.

"The Supplier Code of Conduct is a key component of our sustainable procurement programme."

KPMG has 6,000 suppliers and spends more than £300 million every year on goods and services.

The company have also been in the news recently after being named as an official partner to golf's Ryder Cup in 2010 at the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport, Wales.
