Computer equipment vendors are finding it difficult to encourage consumers to adopt green technology because of a culture of confusion, a lack of awareness and cost issues, research has found.
A study conducted by Green Technology Initiative has found that the majority of firms have implemented strategies to help them become more eco-friendly or are considering doing so, but half of IT chiefs do not know how efficient their current technology is.
In addition, 80 per cent of companies fail to make the link between their IT budget and power costs despite less than five per cent of respondents believing that their systems are highly energy-efficient.
Dan Sutherland, the organisation's chairman, said: "Unless you know how much energy you are using and how high your utilisation rates are, you are not in a good position to manage the infrastructure from a green perspective or any other perspective for that matter."
In related news, a number of technology companies have joined the Climate Savers Computing Initiative, which is pledging to save billions of pounds and cut energy use by promoting energy-efficient computer working.
