Prime minister Gordon Brown said he will help ensure the UK is a desirable location for IT firms to operate by using what he described as a "light touch framework" of regulation.

Speaking at the Google Zeitgeist conference, Mr Brown said that a "free-market approach" to regulatory environment has benefited the economy over the past decade, which may include the accounting software industry.

"I am determined that Britain maintains the light touch framework necessary to stay world-leading in technology and creative industries in the future," he explained.

The prime minister also pledged to improve public services in the UK through technological innovation.

Specifically, he talked about crime mapping for neighbourhood police, electronic school report cards and computer imaging for hospital diagnostic tests.

Analyst Gartner recently suggested that the IT industry will grow increasingly "borderless" and globalised by 2015.
