Many IT projects are failing because of lack of preparation and poor system specifications in the early stages of development, a study has shown.
Research by Coleman Parkes has found that two-thirds of initiatives fail because of poor design criteria mixed with a deficiency in business and technical requirements.
In addition, the survey also discovered a number of contributing factors, including insufficient funds to complete a project, poor understanding of business and a bad choice of technology.
Tony Lock, programme director at analyst firm Freeform Dynamics, said: "Poor systems specification is a major challenge for companies assessing what the business needs and aligning it with what it thinks it wants."
Meanwhile, earlier this month research discovered that more than half of European IT professionals believed that delivering their projects late would not impact upon their job security.
Some 51 per cent of Europeans said their job would not be at risk, compared with 22 per cent of respondents from the Americas.
