Despite the economic downturn, businesses are now viewing IT systems - which may include carbonaccounting software - as a way of keeping costs downs, rather than spending money.

Such is the assertion of Gerry McLaughlin from IT Contractor.com, who said that in previous recessions IT had survived, because in the early days automation of manual systems was seen as a cost cutting measure.

"There seems to have been a sea change in attitude this time around with IT seen as a way of making the business more efficient," he added - which may lead companies to consider investing in business and accounting software.

Meanwhile, firms interested in beginning accounting for carbon emissions may be interested to hear that James Murray, editor of BusinessGreen.com, has claimed that devices that enable this are not the poorer option.

In addition, he claimed that technology firms have embraced energy issues and are now bringing them to market.
