The volume of retail sales in Ireland increased by 6.3 per cent in June 2006 compared to a year earlier, according to official figures.

There was a monthly increase of 2.3 per cent, the Central Statistics Office revealed.

Excluding the motor trade, the annual increase was 6.5 per cent and the monthly change was 0.8 per cent.

The value of retail sales in June saw an 8.5 per cent rise on the figure recorded during the same month last year in and increased by 2.3 per cent on last month.

May 2006 is the latest month for which final detailed figures are available. Volume figures for the three months up to the end of May show that, compared with the three months ending February 2006, the largest increase in the volume of sales was in the Departments Stores sector.

The volume of sales saw a 7.6 per cent rise in that sector over the period.

The largest decrease in the volume of sales was seen in the motor trade sector, where it decreased by 3.5 per cent.
