Tax inspectors are to receive training to improve their knowledge of software related to research and development (R&D) tax credits.
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) inspectors will be given full tuition in the software, in order to give them a better understanding of the R&D processes within different industries and help companies make better claims for tax relief.
Intellect, the trade association for the IT industry in the UK, praised HMRC for introducing the course and is to take part in the training scheme.
Tom Wills-Sandford, deputy director general at Intellect, said: "In the past, the industry's view has been that tax inspectors have not always understood the software development process and how it is related to R&D tax credits.
"It is gratifying that after several years of lobbying by Intellect, we are now presenting this course to give tax inspectors a better understanding of software R&D procedures."
The first training course is to run during the first week of October and will be delivered by both HMRC and Intellect, while senior accountancy executives currently in the software industry are also taking part.
